Choose an image from the DrawBo Mobile App, it will automatically gets uploaded into DrawBo’s memory using Bluetooth DrawBo which uses Artificial intelligence to split the image into simpler lines and curves to make drawing a multi-step learning.

A Short Video For Your Understanding:

The robot draws the image in several simple steps. All you have to do is to give a pencil and a drawing notebook to your kid and ask them to follow DrawBo’s steps.

DrawBo pauses after each step, so there is ample time to copy and learn the pattern before it moves on to the next step.

Conceptualization

Imagination encircles the world. – Albert Einstein Technology is a necessity in today's world, but it can rob children of the simple joys of playing, flipping through books, drawing, singing, and many activities we associate with a carefree childhood. As Engineers ourselves, we knew there could be no innovation without creativity, and Project DrawBo was inspired by this strong belief. We aspired to create educational bots to help kindle and nurture the inherent creativity in kids. Since art is a proven catalyst to spur imagination, we built a bot that could contribute to kids' learning journey by using a scientific and systematic drawing method to ignite their imagination and light their latent creativity.

Alex - Co-founder:

  • He is a deep learning expert working in audio and image processing.

Somnath - Co-founder and Technical head:

  • He has ten years of software/IoT experience in Oracle and multiple startups.

  • She has 8 years of experience in designing electronic circuits.

Patrik - Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering:

  • He has 4 years experience in mechanical system designs and production.

We have a team of eight people including product manager, UI designer and mobile app developer.

The Journey

When we embarked on this journey, our foremost goal was to design a bot that would be interesting and attractive for kids. It had to keep them engrossed and teach them in the simplest possible way. We discussed the subject with educational psychologists and children's art teachers from across the globe.

As we specially created this robot for kids, our biggest challenge was to make it attractive and alluring for them. We wanted them to be so fascinated with DrawBo that they would willingly forsake TV or video games. To achieve the perfect form for DrawBo was our first objective.

Shape Of The Robot

We created several prototypes of different shapes – eagles, snakes, and cartoon characters – and reached out to kids of all ages for their feedback. By popular consensus, the Monarch butterfly shape (which was our team’s favorite too!) was chosen.

As we specially created this robot for kids, our biggest challenge was to make it attractive and alluring for them. We wanted them to be so fascinated with DrawBo that they would willingly forsake TV or video games. To achieve the perfect form for DrawBo was our first objective.

Developing the prototype

Once we decided the final design of Drawbo, we planned the optimized placement of electronic and mechanical components so that they could be assembled with ease.

We gathered the required specifications for each component and sent the details to our manufacturer for making the necessary plastic molds.

Motors and Pulleys

The Brainstorming

We knew what we needed to build this educational drawing tool, but we had to fit the components into a palm-sized device. Choosing the components of the perfect size without compromising the elegant look of DrawBo posed a challenge that involved numerous trials. It was an arduous task to house all the components and yet keep DrawBo light-weight and functioning optimally. Here’s how we overcame this challenge:

How we obtained optimum speed and precision? We undertook extensive research to select a stepper motor that had minimum vibration, small size, weighed less, and did not cause overheating. After testing a number of standard motors, we decided to use customized stepper motors that are responsible for the multi-directional movements of DrawBo.

The Electronics

Light weight & compact motor

The speed and precision of DrawBo depended on the size of the pulleys. Small pulleys were precise but large pulleys were faster. Obtaining a balance of both was our next challenge. After a series of math calculations, we finally arrived at the optimum diameters of the pulleys and their pitch measurements that would give us the desired speed. DrawBo has 2 pulleys in sync with the motors.

Compact PCB

DrawBo is made with state-of-the-art electronic components to ensure stellar performance. Our team designed the PCB (Printed Circuit Board) and had it fabricated by our trusted vendor. Pick-and-place robots were used to mount the ICs (Integrated Circuits) on the PCB by our soldering vendor. We repeated this process several time to achieve a compact size.

The DrawBo App

After we successfully gave form to DrawBo, we turned our attention to the software aspect – the ‘brain’ of DrawBo. We uploaded several thousand images into the App’s Images Gallery and categorized them into three levels based on their level of difficulty as Easy, Medium, and Advanced. We then developed the DrawBo Mobile App with unique image splitting algorithms that divide the images into several lines and curves that kids can draw effortlessly.

We are currently in the final stage of our production and are ready to procure the components. We aim to provide exemplary experience for the user and are constantly upgrading our software and exploring ways of improving our product.

We have been diligently working on employing AI and IoT principles in developing DrawBo for over three years now. After scrutinizing numerous trials, we have successfully developed our fully functional prototype, which has received an unprecedented welcome. We anticipate a considerable volume of pre-order and subsequent sales. This would require production on a large-scale, for which we need to invest in procuring voluminous quantities of molds and hardware components. Our manufacturers are exceptionally reliable and have several decades of experience. Since they are located close to our production base, we do not expect any delay in the supply of the components. Mass production of DrawBo is the final phase of our journey. It will eventually help us market the product at a competitive price. We also plan to expand our current team to ensure efficient management. To start with mass production and to implement additional features to DrawBo, we earnestly look forward to the support of backers who believe in our vision.
